About Us

Founded in 1955, the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast (HSTC) is the only open access, no-kill animal welfare organization operating in Martin County. With over 2,000 animals being rehomed annually through aggressive adoption programs and other services, HSTC has joined leading shelters around the state and country as a model organization for lifesaving culture change in its community.

HSTC accepts all animals regardless of health, age, temperament or breed. Over the years hundreds of thousands of animals have received care through HSTC's programs and services. As a result of our commitment to excellence and fiscal responsibility, HSTC has earned a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator for the ninth consecutive year!

By sponsoring an HSTC program, attending our events, or contributing through our direct mail campaigns or publications, you continue to help us provide quality medical care, food and shelter, adoption and spay neuter programs, humane education and other important services for the animals and community. Thanks to the generous support of people like you, we are able to expand and grow these vital services. Our staff and volunteers encourage compassion for all life on our planet.

Our Legacy: Constance Matheson Baker

Best known to her friends and family as "Connie," Constance Matheson Baker dedicated much of her life to ensuring that all animals receive the care, protection and love they richly deserve. An inspiration and confidant to so many people and a supporter of so many organizations and worthy causes, her heart was with the animals, and her legacy still lives at the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast.

Mrs. Baker was a volunteer, activist and a founder of the Humane Society of Moore County in North Carolina, and a driving force in the creation of the new Humane Society of the Treasure Coast in Palm City, Florida, which features the Constance Matheson Baker Animal Resource Park.

Mrs. Baker's history with the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast dates back to the early days when HSTC was known as the Animal Rescue League of Martin County. As time moved on and it became apparent that a new facility was needed, Mrs. Baker worked with other concerned supporters on developing the plan that led to the construction of the state of the art shelter that exists today.

Although Mrs. Baker is no longer with us, her spirit and legacy live on through the Constance Matheson Baker Animal Resource Park at the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast. We are honored by her commitment, grateful for her gift and vision, and comforted in knowing that her dedication to the mission lives today through the care and love found at the shelter she helped create.
