It's Kitten Season!

Did you know kittens are one of the most vulnerable populations in animal shelters and that many end up there because of well-meaning animal lovers?

The Humane Society of the Treasure Coast wants to assist you in identifying the best approach for helping kittens in your community. Removing kittens from their current environment may not always be the right answer as the mom cat could be nearby getting food (or hiding from you)—and no one can care for a kitten like their mom can!

What to do if you find an adult cat outdoors:

Healthy cats should be given time to wait and observe, as many will return home on their own. If a cat does not have an ear tip and remains on your property for three or more days, please bring the cat to the shelter so it can be checked for a microchip and spay/neuter status; call us at 772-223-8822 to make an appointment. Ear-tipped cats have already been sterilized and, if they appear healthy, can safely remain outdoors. If a cat is sick or injured, contact HSTC at 772-223-8822 or Martin County Animal Services at 772-463-2817. If you choose to feed an outdoor cat, keep in mind that cats quickly learn and remember reliable food sources, and feeding will encourage the cat to continue returning to your property. If you do not want the cat to stay, do not feed it, as it will usually move on to another area.
