Each month, the Dolly’s Dream Project sponsors two dogs available for adoption at Humane Society of the Treasure Coast. When you choose to adopt one of these dogs, you and your new furry friend will receive:
Hanging out with Tetris is as fun as playing a game of Tetris! This high-energy American Pit Bull Terrier is only 4 years old and is looking for a high energy home to call her own. Tetris is a rough-and-tumble lady who would do best in a home with older (or very durable) children. She does not have many manners at this time, but she sure is smart to learn new manners quickly! Tetris can be very picky about her dog friends, so a meet-and-greet with any doggie siblings is suggested.
At 2 years old, Apollo is a rambunctious, fun loving American Pit Bull Terrier Mix who has recently begun looking for a new home. He is very stressed here in a kennel environment and is ready to get outta here and into his new home. Apollo is very high energy and already knows a few basic commands such as “sit”. He will do anything for a treat and HSTC staff thinks he will learn all kinds of tricks with a little bit of training. Apollo has a very high prey drive – he loves to chase those cats and critters! If your home has cats or other small pets, they would probably prefer it if you didn’t bring Apollo home. Apollo’s favorite game is tug with a rope toy.
Walk through the kennels of Humane Society of the Treasure Coast and many other larger animal shelters in Florida and around the nation and you’ll discover quite a few dogs we lovingly call “Square Heads.” Big, tall, short, small they have one thing in common – a head that looks a bit “square.” At first glance, some would call a dog like this a “Pit Bull” or a “bully breed”. But truthfully, these are simply the mixed breed dogs that are now one of the most popular and most beloved dogs in America!
Dolly’s Dream is a project to encourage the adoption of our “Square Heads” and to help counter the unfortunate stereotypes and myths that some people still believe about these dogs. Humane Society of the Treasure Coast finds homes and new families for hundreds of these dogs each year. They are adopted by a wide variety of people – single people, couples, grandparents and families with children of all ages.
"Dolly” (pictured here) was a Square Head who opened the heart of the man who adopted her and taught him how loving, sweet and gentle these dogs can be. No different than any other type of dog.
Today, in her honor, Dolly’s Dream is to give dogs like her a second chance at life and the type of home every dog deserves.
