At the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast (HSTC), we believe that every dog deserves a chance to thrive while they await their forever homes. Our staff and volunteers provide a range of
innovative and engaging enrichment activities designed specifically for shelter dogs. Through our Canine Enrichment Program, which is made possible by Ocean Breeze Resort, we can teach useful and interactive behaviors, keep the dog’s minds engaged and reduce
stress.
While reducing stress through enrichment is a difficult concept to study, The Center for Shelter Dogs (Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine) has started to collect data in
the area of stress and enrichment to try correlate enrichment activities to a reduction or extinction of undesirable behaviors. While a small study in sample size, it points to what we
can see with our own dogs: dogs who are tired from appropriate enrichment are more relaxed and confident. Multiple times a day, our dogs are offered hand-made, interactive
treats and activities to help reduce boredom, stress and restlessness, which will ultimately result in the dogs being happier and more adoptable.
Ongoing donations towards our enrichment program are needed to continue to provide daily mental stimulation for HSTC’s homeless dogs. View our Wish List HERE.
